A stone in the centre of Beddgelert is said to mark the grave of Gelert the faithful hound dog of Prince Llewelyn the Great. In fact, the name of the village, Beddgelert, literally translates as ‘Gelert’s Grave’.


The tale of Gelert the faithful hound dog dates back to the 13th century when Llywelyn Ap Iorwerth, also known as Llywelyn The Great, had a palace near Beddgelert.
