5 Essential Dog Training Exercises for a Well-Behaved Pooch

ree

Working alongside Cotswold Pet Supplies, I am happy to share some top training tips from Founder and Dog Trainer Keith Fallon.

Having a solid foundation is key to a happy and well-behaved dog. Here are five essential dog training exercises every dog should master, and how they can help improve your day-to-day life together:

Sit

Use: A simple yet powerful command. "Sit" helps your dog focus, calm down, and is a great way to manage behaviour in various situations, like greeting people or waiting for meals.

Stay/Wait

Use: This teaches patience and impulse control. A reliable "Stay" or "Wait" command is helpful when you need your dog to hold a position, such as staying at the door before it’s opened, crossing a road or upon seeing some problem ahead.

Recall/Come

Use: This is one of the most important commands for safety. A strong "Come" helps your dog return to you no matter where they are, ensuring they stay safe and by your side during outdoor adventures. Add in a whistle as another option (use 3 pips) such as the Acme Alpha.

Walking on a Lead

Use: Teaching your dog to walk politely on a lead makes walks more enjoyable for both of you. It helps prevent pulling and creates a stronger bond as you explore the world together.

Lie Down

Use: This command promotes relaxation and is a great way to calm an excitable dog. It’s also helpful when you need them to settle down in one place, like during a visit to the vet or visiting a cafe or pub.

Consistency and positive reinforcement are the keys to success in training. The more you practice these commands, the easier it will be for your dog to follow them when you need them most.

Take your time to thoroughly teach each exercise so that they become second nature to your dog.

Don't be afraid to go back a step if things don't seem to be going as planned "make haste slowly" is an old dog trainer expression.

I recommend training in short 5/10 minute sessions every day, aiming for at least 20 minutes a day.
